Preschool: The Prodigal Son

February 22, 2009

This morning, we learned the second half to the story of the Prodigal Son. The father in the story forgave his son and welcomed him back with open arms. We learned that God does the same for us. He knows the mistakes we make and sees our sins, but He forgives them and loves us no matter what.

We played a fun game, had a delicious snack and celebrated just like they did in our Bible story.

Our Bible point question this month was Why did Jesus tell these stories? The answer: Because Jesus wants me to know what God is like! Today during our talk time we talked about what God is like. Here are some things that were overheard in talk time: “God loves me even if I do something wrong.” “God is strong.” God is really big!”

Parents: This week find time to ask your kid what they think God is like. You might just be surprised at what you find out your child already knows about God.

Next week we begin a new lesson. Question: Who will help you? Answer: Jesus will help me.

Preschool: The Prodigal Son

February 15, 2007

We continue to explore some of the stories Jesus told with the story of the Prodigal Son. We learned about Part 1 of the story. The father gives his sonan inheritance and the son makes poor choices until he is left with nothing. Because he is too ashamed to go back home, he takes a job feeding pigs. Next week we will find out how the story ends, with part 2 of the prodigal son.

To help us remember our story, we played a fun game called Feed the Pig, we ate pig cookies and made pig pictures. We also talked about the hard choices we have to make sometimes.

Q: Why did Jesus tell these stories? A: Jesus wants me to know what God is like!

Our memory verse this month is ” The Son wants to tell others about the Father.” Luke 10:22

Parents, this week play a game with your child. At bedtime, make up scenarios like the ones listed below and have your child give you a thumbs up if the person made a wise choice and a thumbs down if the person made a bad choice.

  • David’s fried came to his house to play. David chose to share his new truck. Good choice or bad choice?
  • Emma’s mom told her to clean up her room. Emma chose to watch t.v. instead of cleaning her room. Good choice or bad choice?
  • Luke had 2 cookies. His sister Julie asked for one. Luke shared one of his cookies with Julie. Good choice or bad choice?

Preschool: The Lost Sheep

February 8, 2009

This month, we’ll be learning some of the parables that Jesus used to teach people about God.

Why did Jesus tell these stories? Jesus wants me to know what God is like.

This week during GreenHouse, the parable we learned about was called The Lost Sheep. We know that God loves us and cares for us just like a shepherd will care for his sheep. And we learned the shepherd cares for each sheep so much, that if one of them gets lost he will look and look until he finds it. To help us remember our story, we played lots of fun games, had a yummy snack mix (with marshmallows for sheep) and made fuzzy lamb pictures.

Our memory verse this month is “The Son (hold hand low like a little boy) wants to tell others (take both hands and make them move like they are talking) about the Father. (hold hand high like a tall man)” Luke 10:22 (hold hands out front like a Bible)

Parents, This week play a fun game of hide-n-seek with your child’s favorite stuffed animal. Take turns hiding it and finding it. When the game is over, tell your child that you love them so much that if they ever got lost, you would look and look and look until you found them. Remind them that God loves them so much just like you do!

Preschool: Jesus at the Temple

Feb. 1, 2009

Why did Jesus tell these stories? Jesus wants me to know what God is like!

Today we learned the story about Jesus teaching at the temple when He was just a young boy. We’ll be learning about some of the stories Jesus would tell (like the Lost Sheep, and the Prodigal Son.) Jesus would talk to all sorts of people about God because He wants everyone to know what God is like. Our Bible verse this month reminds us of that, “The Son wants to tell others about the Father.” Luke 10:22

At the beginningof our story, Jesus was lost and Mary and Joseph couldn’t find him. To remember this part of the story, we played a hide and seek game that was a lot of fun! We also had fun talking about our dads today. Jesus has a dad just like each of us have a dad. Jesus’ dad is God.

We had fun talking about our dads!

During our talk time, our question was, “What is one thing I know about God?” Our kids shared that God made the grass, God cares for us, God loves me, God is my friend, God is Jesus’ Father, God is BIG, and lots of other fun things they know about God. This month, as we explore the stories that Jesus told, we’ll learn even more about God.

Parents, our challenge for you this week is to talk each night at bedtime about the things you know about God. It might be fun to keep a list and add to each night. At the end of this week, count how many things you listed. God has revealed lots of things about himself to us. It might be fun for you to discover what things your child has already learned about God.
