Fall Play Days

Because of the recent cold snap, some of our previous fall play day plans have changed. But there are still several opportunities to get together with other families. Play Days give moms/dads an opportunity to hang out and talk while their kids play together.

Wed. Oct. 21st, 10 am, Washington Park: Play at the Park(weather permitting)

We might have a small window of warmth next week. If the weather allows, we’ll meet up on Wednesday to play at Washington Park. I’ll bring some drinks with me for the parents and the kiddos! See you then!

Thurs. Oct. 22nd, 10 am, AP Room: Pumpkin Decorating (Bring your own pumpkin)

Next Thursday, we’ll open up our AP room for pumpkin carving. We’ll provide supplies, and help take care of the mess. You bring a pumpkin or pumpkins to carve or paint. Come laugh and have some fun!

Thurs. Nov. 5th, 10 am, AP Room: to be announced

Check back later for details about this play date. Put Novemebr 5th at 10:00 a.m. on your calendar to save the date!

Thurs. Nov. 19th, 10 am, Meet at the Cookie Factory at the Mall: Cookie Decorating

Meet me at 10 at the Cookie Factory in the mall. We’ve set up a special opportunity to decorate a cookie and have a drink there. Afterwards, we can burn off someenergy at the mall playarea.

Building Community with Preschoolers

I read a great article today that I wanted to share with you! It was published by the company that producesour curriculum for preschoolers. Their curriculum builds in a special small group time where kids get to share with other kids how the lesson applies to them. At WSCC, we call it “Talk Time.”

On Sunday mornings, our Talk Time is one of my favorite times to be in a room or leading my own group. I remember last month when our lesson was aboutGod calling David to be the future king. Our question during talk time was- “what wouldYOU like to be when you grow up?” I loved the answers the kids gave….some of them said a fireman or a bus driver. But my favorite answers were “a princess” and “spiderman.” Oh, to be a kid again!

Our talk time does a few imporant things in building community with our kids…

First, it gives kids an opportunity to share something of themselves on a very simple level. As people, we want to be known. We want to be heard. Our talk time gives each child their ownopportunity to experience that. Every child in the circlehas an opportunity to speak and be heard.

Second, it allows kids to build friendships and gives them a sense of belonging. The words our volunteer leaders use can be instrumental in this. “Let’s make room for all our friends in our cirlce.” “While our friends are talking, let’s be good listeners.” “Let’s let our friend, Maggie, share first.” “We have a new friend today, Marcus. Marcus, can you tell all our friends in the circle about….”

During Count Me In, when we learned about GROUP we boiled it down to one word: FRIENDS.Many of our kids will build lifelong friendships at West Side. I’m so glad I get to see the very beginning!

Pumpkin Giveaway and Food Collection

Each year our preschool youth group, Friendship Circle, has a service project that allows our kids to experience kindness and generosity.

First, our kids gather together in a local neighborhood. Then we divide up into group with wagons full of pumpkins.

Then, we sneak around the neighborhood leaving pumpkins on doorsteps to spread kindness!

This year, we asked our wonderful neighbors to help us with a second part of our project! We asked our neighbors to consider leaving non-perishable food items on their porch so that we could help others in our Springfield community through the food pantry. (Local food pantires have been very low this year and have a huge need for donated items.)

We want to thank our neighbors on RALEIGH and NORWALK for giving so generously! We had wagons full of food when we were done!

Happy Fall Ya’ll! To our great neighbors, thanks for being so kind as we visited your neighborhood!

Preschool: October 5

Today our Count Me In word was GROUP! The people on our poster remind us that God gives us our friends at church that we can talk to every week. We learned about the early church and how God’s followers lived as a family (Acts 2:42-47, 4:32-35, 5:12-16).

KEY QUESTION: Are you ready to Gather, Group, Give and Go?

ANSWER: COUNT ME IN!

After we made a cool friend mural, we headed to GreenHouse to hear our Bible story and worship God. Our new songs are so much fun to sing and we know it makes God happy when we praise him.

We dance as we sing praises to God!

We dance as we sing praises to God!

Then, when we get back to our class we have a special time called Talk Time. This is where we GROUP with our friends to talk about our story and about how it applies to us! Each child has an opportunity to share. This morning our question was, “Can you name one of your friends?” Then we prayed and thanked God for our friends. This special time is our opportunity to GROUP just the way God wants us to!

We take turns listening and talking.

Afterwards, we had some yummy “friend” cookies and played another game.
Preschoolers need friendships just like adults do. Being a part of church every week can really strengthen the bonds our kids form. We hope that all of our parents will make Sunday morning a priority in their family schedule!
PARENT HELP: This week before bedtime pull out a pencil and paper. Create a list with your child of some of the friends that God has given them. Each night pray for all the friends on the list and thank God for giving us our friends!
